What to Pack for Your Next Tropical Vacation

Posted by Kathryn Harris-Lowe on

Last week, I went on a last minute trip to Florida.  I managed to pack all my stuff into a carry-on and was actually very happy with what I packed, at least until the end. Due to an unseasonable ice storm (that was not called for until after we left!), our connecting flight home from Newark was cancelled.  We ended up having to stay in New Jersey/ New York for two extra days.  While we took a direct flight there, due to costs, we decided to take two flights home.

Unfortunately, we (myself, my mom, and my friend) were not prepared for the weather in New Jersey/ New York.  We only brought clothes for Florida, and even the clothes we wore on the flight down were lighter weight (as we drove right to the airport parking).

So, with what I've learned from packing for my last trip, I've decided to share what would be on my next packing list for a tropical vacation (especially if I have any layovers or connecting flights).

My Tropical Vacation Packing List:

  • On the Fly Pants
  • Light Jacket
  • Bathing suits
  • Bathing suit cover ups
  • Sunglasses
  • Beach Bag
  • Shorts
  • T-Shirts/ Tank Tops
  • Underwear (bring enough for a few extra days)
  • Prescriptions/ Vitamins (bring enough for a few extra days)
  • Lightweight Scarf
  • A Pair of Sneakers
  • A Pair of Flip Flops
  • A Pair of Sandals
  • Dress
  • A Sun Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sweatshirt
  • Jeans

Shop Some of My Favourite Items from My Packing List:

My Cartoon Rose scarf definitely pulled double duty on this last trip. It was a scarf at the airport and in New York, and as a sarong by the pool in Florida.  Shop more of our square scarves here.

I got these pants for Christmas and I love them! They are super comfortable and can actually look semi dressy.  I wore these at the airport and to dinner as capris!  I went up a size in these because I preferred the looser fit.

How cute is this bathing suit? I love this suit. It is comfortable and the peplum makes it super flattering!

Our tote bags are perfect for the beach!  They stretch so they can fit your sunscreen, book, towel, and whatever else you want to bring with you to the beach! Click here to shop more of our tote bags.

I love my Roses Flare Dress! It is comfortable and it was ready to wear from the second I took it out of my suitcase (it doesn't wrinkle)! Shop more of our flare dresses here.

These are some of my favourite shorts, and they are perfect for wearing over your bathing suit! I went up a size in these because I preferred the looser fit.

Shop Some Items I Wish I Brought:

I love my Kat's Print Boutique beanie, and it would have been perfect for the New York weather. It is also small enough that it wouldn't have taken up any space in my luggage.  Shop all our beanies here.

The only jacket I brought on my trip was my jean jacket, which was definitely not warm enough for New York.  I wish a brought a warmer one, or even wore it on the plane!

This comfortable and cozy lightweight sweatshirt would have been perfect for walking through Central Park! It would also be great for wearing on the plane! Shop all our lightweight sweatshirts here.

Key Lessons I Learned About Packing from My Last Trip:

  • Always pack extra essentials, and not just for one day, but a few. Pack extra underwear, prescriptions, vitamins, or any other essentials.
  • Wear or pack some warmer clothes, especially if you have a layover or connecting flight. This includes a sweater, jeans, gloves, and/or beanies.
  • Pack items that can be worn multiple ways.  Use a lightweight scarf as a scarf or sarong. Wear your On the Fly pants as full length pants or capris.
  • You will likely live at the beach, so bring some cute bathing suits and cover ups!
